Abstract

For many years it has been assumed that coronary vasodilatation is the method of choice in the treatment of angina. This was the logical result of correlating the clinical effectiveness of glyceryl trinitrate with its vasodilator activity in animals. However, much evidence has now accumulated which suggests that glyceryl trinitrate does not act in this way (Rowe, 1964; Win-bury, 1964). If it is assumed that it is not possible to relieve angina by increasing flow through the coronary arteries, new approaches to the treatment of angina must be found.
