Summary
Optical rehabilitation after implantation of a diffractive multifocal IOL has been investigated in a prospective study. A 3M diffractive multifocal IOL was implanted into 47 eyes of 33 patients (mean age 67,6 years). The visual acuity for the distant and the near with and without distance correction was tested on the second to fourth postoperative day and after 6 weeks, respectively. Using the Ginsburg test, contrast sensitivity was determined. After 6 weeks a subjective anamnesis of the patients was performed.
On the second to fourth postoperative day the mean visual acuity for distance was 0,6 and for near Nd4 without any correction. Applying the best distance correction gave a visual acuity of 0,9 for distance and Nd2,5 for the near. The contrast sensitivity equivalent acuity was 20/40.
Six weeks after the operation the mean visual acuity increased to 0,7 for distance and Nd2 for near without correction in either case. However, a value of 1,0 for distance and Nd1,5 for near were achieved with the best distance correction. The contrast sensitivity equivalent acuity increased to 20/30.
Six weeks following the operation of the second eye an excellent binocular visual acuity with and without the best distance correction was observed for 14 patients. The anamnesis carried out in all cases 6 weeks after operation demonstrated that all patients were satisfied with their diffractive multifocal IOL.
