Zusammenfassung

Am 3. Dezember 1967 führte Christiaan Barnard die erste Herztransplantation von Mensch zu Mensch durch. Dieser aufsehenerregenden Operation, die auf den langjährigen experimentellen Vorarbeiten der Arbeitsgruppe um Shumway in Stanford basierte, folgten weltweit eine ganze Reihe weitere Eingriffe. Die Ergebnisse waren allesamt enttäuschend. Erst durch die konsequente Entwicklung einer zuverlässigen Abstoßungsdiagnostik, Verbesserungen in der Immunsuppression und die Formulierung strikter Auswahlkriterien für Spender und Empfänger gelang es, die Herztransplantation als ein erfolgreiches Verfahren in der Behandlung der terminalen Herzinsuffizienz zu etablieren.
