Abstract
In this paper the results of the standardization efforts of the 3I-project are described. Electronic data interchange needs standardization of exchanged messages. In the 3I-project ten different types of messages were defined. The use of these messages for exchanging information between hospitals, GP’s and pharmacies is described. It is concluded that the electronic data interchange between hospitals and GP’s can be cost-effective. The electronic communication of recipees between GP’s and pharmacies is not cost-effective at the moment.
