Abstract
Explanation is recognised as a critical element in the design of computer-based expert systems, especially in those intended for a wide range of users of differing expertise. Previous work has approached the provision of explanation facilities in an ad-hoc manner, ‘adding on’ an explanation component to the original system. This paper describes the design and implementation of an advisory system in the context of post-operative care, which aims to provide supportive explanation and advice to user queries in both diagnostic and therapeutic contexts. An investigative process for the user is emphasised, rather than the traditional diagnostic ‘labelling’ process. Explanations are provided at each stage in the decision-making and are augmented by a more in-depth (causal) explanation facility to supply further justification.
