Grain Boundary Structure Determination by HREM: A Comparison with Computer Relaxed Configurations for <001> Pure Tilt in Germanium

Abstract

<001> pure tilt grain boundaries in germanium have been studied by high resolution electron microscopy. The observed structures are entirely reconstructed. The strain energy calculated with different interatomic potential is minimum for the observed configurations except at small angle. The entropy term contained in the free energy may well stabilize the configurations with several equivalent variants which are observed at small angle.
