Summary
Selected highlights of the treatment of safety problems in history leads over to present day safety and reliability methods, which aim at a rational assessment of the required safety level and the proof of its achievement by stochastic analysis. The paper concentrates on the ultimate longitudinal strength problem of ship structures. It is shown that stochastic modelling of the significant load and strength parameters raise a number of important questions, which, during the last 50 years of ship structural design, caused a number of expert arguments. They are considered worthwhile to be recognised in the paper. The presented examples of modern safety methods shall clarify still open questions and contribute to their solution. Eventually, based on the present day situation, probable future developments of stochastic safety and reliability methods of load carrying structures are set up.
