Summary
The recent one hundred years continued to produce tremendous changes in all technical fields, including shipping, shipbuilding and also initial ship design being the sum of methods and tools for planning the production of commercial newbuildings in a first conceptual stage. Nevertheless, there are also a number of principles to be recognized in this evolution process, which maintained their validity all the time.
In this paper it will be attempted to pursue important threads with their gradual or unsteady changes or their continuity, respectively. In this context, commercial ship types and their design are treated in the connexion with their environment in a global, technically and economically optimised transport chain. In detail, important examples of the following ship types are briefly put as highlights into this discussion: commercial sailing ships, tankers and bulk carriers as well as passenger ships and general cargo ships and their special types in the change of the time; moreover, commercial highspeed crafts of latest time are described, too. A concluding prospect into the future tries to outline technical and economical trends being possible for both continuation and limits of this evolution.
