Summary
A historical survey from the turn of the century until today shows how indispensable measurement techniques were to theoretically understand and implement innovations at the given time. The dynamic development in all domains of measuring was utilised, of course, in all branches of the complex system ship. The invention of new sensors, for example, ensued the development of novel nautical devices. The ability to convert different physical quantities to electrical signals made it possible to utilise modern engine management systems that are based on recording a variety of signals. However, measurement techniques existed earlier, for example, in the form of transferring a specific mechanical quantity to a pointer deflection and to print out the time record on paper.
The enormous progress is outlined for some of those areas of application that still make up the substantial part of experimental investigations, to clarify reasons of damages, to check limit values, or to verify new approaches in research.
