Summary
With the podded propulsion system DOLPHIN STN ATLAS Marine Electronics and Lips BV, Drunen/NL, have developed an advanced propulsion system which meets the requirements of a modern propulsion system.
DOLPHIN characterizes a high degree of manoeuvrability, short crash-stop distance, small turning circle, and a rapid dynamic response of the drive system. Compared to conventional fixed pitch propellers energy savings of 6–10% are possible due to the omission of the rudder, shafts, stern thrusters, and appendages and also to an hydrodynamic optimized stern in connection with the podded drive.
The drive concept, double winding synchronous motor together with the synchro-converter and the power-plant concept, allows the reduction of the electrical components and increases the safety and redundancy of the system due to a simple system structure. The advantages of this concept will be dicussed.
