Kavitation im Schiffbau

Cavitation in Shipbuilding

Summary

Cavitation, i. e. the filling of voids in the fluid with vapor by negative pressure, may effect ship performance by thrust breakdown, erosion, vibration and noise. After different types of propeller cavitation a historic overview on the phenomenon initially mentioned by Parsons and Barnaby is given together with the development of cavitation test facilities. Following the similarity laws for cavitation, full scale investigations on propellers will be looked on which form one basis for the cavitation correlation between model and full scale. Attached to this is the creation of cavitation from nuclei as one cornerstone of the problem. Finally, after a short outlook on nowadays experimental investigations, further necessary practical and research developments for the control of erosion and vibration by cavitation will be mentioned jointly with computational possibilities.
