Summary
After the introduction of steam engines for ship propulsion, vibration problems were soon reported to occur on some ships in service. The first publications considering the phenomenon date back to the 80ies of the 19th century. Noise aspects were dealt with considerably later. Especially because of workmen’s health protection demands, maximum allowable noise levels were introduced by the middle of the 20th century. This situation required engineers to deal with vibration and noise aspects during the design phase of a vessel. Prediction methods were developed and used in design to obtain a ‚silen‘ ship. This paper describes the history of such prediction methods, starting with simple estimation formulas and ending with advanced computer aided simulation methods frequently used in today’s shipbuilding practice.
