Summary
The development of German submarine construction during this period is described from the first submersibles with short submerged endurance and shallow diving depth via conventional diesel/battery-electric submarines with snorkel to modern air-independent non-nuclear submarines.
A brief historical review mentions some of the names associated with this development, together with task areas and indication of their importance.
There are considerable differences between the development and construction of submarines during the first half-century with two World Wars and over the last 40 years with the rebuilding of the German Navy in the scope of the WEU and NATO with their peacekeeping measures.
In addition, some civilian submersibles are presented while the outlook for the future shows the air-independent Class 212 and Class 214 submarines.
