Zusammenfassung

Seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg haben in der Elektronik neuartige Geräte und Bauelemente Eingang gefunden. Die Wirkungsweise dieser Geräte beruht auf Atom- oder quantenoptischen Effekten. Eine dieser Entwicklungen ist der Laser. Nach der Erfindung im Jahre 1960 hat es sehr lange gedauert, bis der Laser für wirtschaftliche Anwendungen einsetzbar wurde. Die zynische Feststellung, „der Laser - eine Lösung, die nach einem Problem Ausschau hält“, wurde bald eines Besseren belehrt. Heute erstreckt sich die Anwendung auf weite Bereiche der Technik, der Naturwissenschaft und der Medizin (Ineichen 1985).
