Abstract

We review the Biot theory of the propagation of acoustic waves in multiconnected porous media filled with fluid. Theoretical predictions are compared to experiments in many different physical systems such as packed and sintered glass beads, fourth sound in 4He, polymeric gels which allow study of the critical behaviour of gel in the sol — gel transition. Using acoustics as a local probe of fluid concentration variations in porous media, we can determine the concentration profiles during miscible and immiscible fluid flows through the medium, and analyse our results in terms of dispersion and capillary diffusion.
