Abstract
Many Hospital Information Systems for University Hospitals have to meet increased demands with severely restricted ressources. This situation is characterized and an approach to meet the resulting challenge is described. It consists of the design of a very general application system on the basis of a fourth generation software environment, compatible with the available mainframe alternatives. Selection and design process are described and the results evaluated put into perspective for future plans. The available evidence points to a more than five fold productivity Increase In the production of a very general tool system which win enable coordinated but decentralized application system development and maintenance in a very heterogeneous environment.
