The regional transfusion service covers south and west Scotland where 3 million people currently require 160,000 annual blood donations from 1,500 donor sessions to be processed and distributed to 25 main hospitals. The longest round trip is 500 km. Hospitals need for blood is increasing, but many large factories which used to yield good blood donor sessions have closed.
