Zusammenfassung
Aufgrund archäologischer Funde wissen wir, daß Amputationen seit dem Neolithikum durchgeführt worden sind: Messer und Sägen aus Knochen und Stein wurden aus jener Zeit zusammen mit den knöchernen Überresten von Amputationsstümpfen gefunden. Anfänglich wurden abgestorbene oder schwer beschädigte Gliedmaßen amputiert; später wurden Amputationen als rituelle Opferhandlung, Austreibung von dämonischer Besessenheit, Besänftigung von Gottheiten oder Idolen, Bestrafung und in einzelnen Fällen sogar als Schönheitsoperation durchgeführt.
