Abstract

Consider a four electron composite system CL, made up of a core, C, and a set of ligands, L, with two orbitals spanning the core and one orbital spanning the ligands. We ask the question: What is the stereochemistry which permits optimum ground state bonding of C and L? Stated in different language, what is the point group symmetry of the CL system which dictates the point group symmetry of the three orbitals, which, in turn, allows the three orbitals to best accomodate the four electrons?
