Abstract

In order to computerize clinical chemistry and haematology laboratories a large number of laboratory information systems is available at this moment. Generally these systems are designed for use by one laboratory. The existence of more similar laboratories within a single hospital is a complicating factor for the lab-automation, certainly when interactions between those laboratories are present.

The problems which may arise as a consequence of the existence of a number of similar laboratories within one hospital are treated in this paper. On the basis of the objectives of laboratory automation it is discussed which additional demands are made upon (a) labsystem(s) when more laboratories want to use it. Some models to handle this situation pass in review. Attention is given to the influence which the presence of a total hospital information system may have.

Finally, the approach which, has been realized in our laboratory system LABZIS is discussed.
