Abstract

Parts of MADIS [1], the hospital information system of the clinics and institutes of our Medical School, are the subsysteme

MADRIS

  • which is a register information system (long- and short-term storage of patient records and data)

MADRAS

  • which is a search and evaluation system on the basis of descriptive and mathematical statistics.

Both these subsystems are developed in order to support medical care, medical research and the management and long-term planning of health care systems.

In the planning phase we had to decide whether and to which extent existing software components were useful for our objectives. This was possible, but we must solve both some interface problems between the software components and some problems of user-computer interaction (in terms of a problem-oriented language).

For some years we have used MADRIS and MADRAS in an effective manner. The preparation and generation of a new register in general needs less than four weeks in case of a problem analysis which has been finished before.
