Already in the title of this paper it has been assumed that the molecules which will be treated have at least a plane as symmetry element; this means that the molecular orbitals and electronic states can be classified according to the irreducible representations of the Cs point group. It should be noted, however, that also molecules with only approximate Cs symmetry may be successfully described by the models discussed below, since the part of the nuclear potential that is not invariant under the operations of the group Cs often represents only a minor perturbation.
