Abstract

The multidisciplinary character of cancer research, which affects every scientific discipline, causes the cancer researcher’s particularly great need for information. In order to satisfy this need, the CANCERNET system has been jointly developed since 1966 by the French Cancer Research Center, Institut Gustave-Roussy at Villejuif, and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. The main purpose of the CANCERNET system is:
  1. 1.

    The acquisition of the essential literature of experimental and clinical cancer research;

  2. 2.

    the detailed analysis of this literature by expert scientists using a specific vocabulary;

  3. 3.

    the fast and purposeful dissemination of information;

  4. 4.

    the processing of special inquiries according to available literature.
