While studying data base structures for medical information systems we have implemented a data base system based on the relational model [1]. Although a relational system offers obvious advantages in meeting the changing and often unpredictable data base requirements in a medical research and clinical routine, there have nevertheless been only a few efforts made in this direction. The main reason could be that the implementation of a completely new DBMS (like system R [2]) is far beyond the range of most small data base teams, including ours.
