Lernen und Prüfen mit dem Interaktiven Computerunterstützten Unterrichtssystem ICUS: Beispiel „Anatomische Propädeutik“

The interactive computer-assisted instructional system ICUS (acronym for the German “Interaktives Computerunterstütztes Unterrichtssystem”) has been designed to function alternatively as information retrieval system, simulation system or tutorial system. ICUS allows for interactive development of lessons by various authors as well as for interactive learning.

The basic element is the “instructional unit” which consists of a text-and-media section, and contains a question or exercise, answers, provisions for additional help and requests. The text-and-media sections provide didactic material and allow implementation of a random-access-slide-projector. Answers comprise anticipated answers, acceptable synonyms, responses to students’ reactions, be they right or wrong, a branching strategy and a coefficient of correctness. Instructional units may be integrated by the author into his field alternatively, according to the different strategies of sequencing available.

The student may choose the type of dialogue: reply to questions, operating instructions, explanations of terms, input of comment, output of his record, choice of instructional units, choice of questions, request for additional help, etc..

The system analyzes the student’s input syntactically and semantically and reacts according to the predetermined strategy of the author. Application of this APL-written system is being tested in the context of a course in anatomy with well-defined, detailed instructional objectives and concise terminology. Further applications are planned in the clinical field where direct access to the data base of clinical histories and findings will provide an opportunity to simulate medical management and decision processes.
