Abstract
Echocardiography is a widely used method wich allows a non invasive visualization of the morphology and the motion of the cardiac structures. Depending on the use of unidimensional [M-mode] or bidimensional probes, strip chart recordings [distance versus time] or video films on a frame by frame basis are generated. The analysis of these images requires tedious hand measurements and further derived calculations. Furthermore, it is cumbersome if not impossible to analyse the continuous motion of the cardiac structures or to make planimetry of the cardiac cavities without a computer help. Therefore, a computerized system with image analysis capabilities represents a great help in the processing and the reporting of echocardiographic data. We decided to implant such a system in our laboratory and our experience since November 1977 is reported here.
