Abstract
In chapters 3 and 4 we have been concerned with the calculation of the rate probability of chemical processes in terms of noninteracting ingoing and outgoing channel states. However, we have obtained closed rate expressions in the nonadiabatic limit only, i.e. we have assumed that the ‘effective’ coupling between the ingoing and outgoing states is sufficiently small that only first order terms in the expansion of the T-operator need to be retained. This implies that Veff is small, but in view of the composite nature of this operator the actual potential energy of interaction which appears in the exact Hamiltonian is not necessarily small.
