Abstract
The equations of reaction and diffusion are often used to model multispecies populations whose individuals interact in some way to produce other individuals (or eliminate individuals), and also move about in some random manner. The use of these equations is rightly subject to dispute in many cases, and so it is appropriate that we spend some effort in attempting to elucidate the assumptions on which they are based in population dynamical contexts.
