Abstract
The role of mathematical models in helping solve macro-social problems is discussed, with an emphasis on:

the relation to the requirements of decision-making processes,
-
the characteristics of different kinds of forecasting and the corresponding methodological requirements,
-
the methodology and the three greatest shortcomings of modelling macro-social systems at present.
