System Outline — The Hardware/Software Base
The selection of Univac ‘494’ computers and the development of the Midas programming software has already been mentioned in Chapter 1. With the growth of the functional and geographical coverage of the System, the original computer configuration has been expanded modestly at the central site, and considerably as regards terminals. The most significant change has been the substitution of more modern disk memories in place of the original Fastrand drums, but no replacement of the two ‘494’ computers is contemplated before 1979. The existing configuration is illustrated in Fig 3–1.
