Abstract
It is a little surprising for me to be the first lecturer in a colloquium devoted to a science I know nothing about. As a historian, I am very little acquainted with the history of your science. Actually, the reason for my being here is not stereology; it is the celebration of a bicentennial, that of the Essai d’Arithmétique morale, first published by Buffon in 1777.
