Abstract

The area tangent count, first suggested as a stereological descriptor by F. N. Rhines in the decade of the fifties, is performed on any two dimensional structure that contains lineal features. A test line is swept across some delineated field of area A0, and a count is made of the number of times the line forms a tangent with some selected class of lineal features. The working stereological parameter, TA, is obtained by dividing this count of tangent points by the area sampled, A0.
