Zusammenfassung
Bei allen optischen interferometrischen Meßverfahren bildet die Lichtwellenlänge die Maßeinheit. Bruchteile dieser Einheit sind in digitalen Schritten meßbar, und durch Interpolation ist eine noch wesentlich höhere Auflösung möglich. Deshalb gehören interferometrische Messungen zu den genauesten der Meßtechnik. Das wurde 1960 eindrucksvoll dokumentiert, als die Vakuumwellenlänge der orangeroten Spektrallinie des Isotops Krypton-86 zu λ = 1/1650763,73 m = 605,780211 nm festgesetzt und anstelle des in Sèvres bei Paris aufbewahrten Urmeters zum neuen Längennormal erklärt wurde. Seitdem werden alle Längenmessungen letztlich interferometrisch an dieses Normal angeschlossen.
