Summary
In the “Marburg Virus” Disease there is — in addition to remarkable changes in liver and other organs — a new type of splenopathy and of virus lymphadenitis.
The spleen shows a nearly complete disappearance of the white pulp and an insudation of the cords of the red pulp, which contains fibrin and PAS-positive material near to the sinus walls. This insudation seems to disappear between the 14th and 16th day of the illness. In the lymph nodes follicular necrosis, diffuse hyperplasia of the pulp, follicular and sinusoidal giant cells and a remarkable macrophagocytosis are observed.
Intracytoplasmic perinuclear vacuolization in basophilic stem cells of the pulp as well as in retothelial cells of the sinuses seems to be specific for this viral disease. This type of vacuolization could be demonstrated in all examined lymph nodes and even in the remaining lymphoid tissue of the spleen. It corresponds to intracytoplasmic antigen deposition as seen with the fluorescence microscope in infected guinea pigs.
