Abstract
The description of the muscular manifestations of thyroid deficiency was made by Kocher [1] and by Hoffman [2] shortly after the recognition of myotonia by Erb [3] and others. The differentiation of these two syndromes is sometimes difficult and the two may coexist. My purpose in this report is to compare the two syndromes and to describe in some detail the phenomenon of delay in muscle contraction and relaxation which is characteristic of hypothyroidism. We call this phenomenon pseudomyotonia because it resembles true myotonia although it appears to have an entirely different mechanism.
