Zusammenfassung

Ein Blick auf die Sterblichkeitstabellen gibt Aufschluß darüber, wie schwerwiegend auch heute noch die Rolle des Tetanus ist. Die klassischen Infektionskrankheiten haben während der letzten 20 Jahre an Häufigkeit stark abgenommen, während die Zahl der Todesfälle durch Starrkrampf in Ländern, in denen die Tetanusimpfung ungenügend verbreitet ist, hartnäckig stehen zu bleiben scheint. Abb. 95 veranschaulicht die Rolle des Starrkrampfes in der deutschen Bundesrepublik: die Krankheit verursacht mehr Todesfälle als Scharlach, Abdominaltyphus, Diphtherie und selbst mehr als Kinderlähmung; ihre Bösartigkeit wird nur durch die des Keuchhustens übertroffen !
