Zusammenfassung
Festkörper lassen sich gemäß ihrem spezifischen (elektrischen) Widerstand ϱ1 bei Zimmertemperatur (~ 300 °K) in Metalle, Halbleiter und Isolatoren einteilen; der Widerstand der Halbleiter liegt zwischen 10-4 und 1012 Ωcm. Diese Klassifizierung ist ziemlich willkürlich, doch ist der Widerstand bei Zimmertemperatur das einzige gemeinsame Merkmal, durch welches alle Halbleiter gekennzeichnet werden können. Sonst gibt es keine grundlegenden Unterschiede zwischen Halbleitern und Isolatoren. Charakteristisch für viele Halbleiter ist jedoch auch die große Empfindlichkeit ihrer Leitfähigkeit gegenüber geringen Beimengungen von Fremdstoffen und gegenüber der Temperatur.
