Abstract

Although many cases of the Arnold-Chiari malformation have been reported in man, only a few cases of this condition have been described in animals. In 1952 Frauchiger and Fankhauser described for the first time in a calf this congenital malformation in which parts of cerebellum and medulla oblongata are displaced into the spinal canal. This condition was also described by Cameron and Hill (1955) in a newborn baboon, and by Gellatly (1957) and Fankhauser (1959) in a piglet. In all these four cases spina bifida was also observed.
