Summary
The atmosphere’s content of natural-radioactive material may be understood and its amount may be estimated as the consequence of a circulation process: Each of the three radioactive decay-series contains as one of its decay products an inert gas (“emanation”) which partially diffuses into the atmosphere from the upper layers of the soil. The changes of the emanation in the soil is caused by the diffusion.
After the exhalation from the soil’s capillaries the emanations follow the pattern of the motions of the atmosphere. Their transport is controlled by the apparent diffusion of the atmospheric “ austauscht” Under this control they arrive at a certain mean distribution with height. They are returned to the ground by precipitation and other processes, mostly after having changed into their decay products.
As a consequence of this it must be expected that the deficit of emanations in the upper layers of the ground is equal to the atmosphere’s total content of emanations—a fact confirmed by comparison of measurements and estimations.
The atmosphere’s radioactivity is mainly represented by radon and thoron and their decay products; this fact due to the existence of the mother materials U238, U235, and Th232 in the soil. The daughter-products of actinium do not play a role in comparison to the activities coming from radon and thoron products.
Data on the content of emanations in the soil’s air, on exhalation, and on the concentration of radon (and thoron) in the atmosphere are completing the survey.
The second part of the paper communicates a short survey on the artificial radioactivity of the atmosphere.
The composition of the artificial radioactivity in the atmosphere is derived by the frequency-distribution of fission products depending on their mass-numbers. The variation of this composition with time may be derived from the different decay-constants. Besides this some experiences on the height-distribution and the variation of fission-product-mixture with time are given. The test-stop in fall 1958 had the consequences, that, beginning in the middle of the year 1959, the artificial radioactivity in air and precipitation decreased and arrived almost at zero at the end of 1960.
