Zusammenfassung

Galen (2. Jahrhundert v. Chr.) hat den Thymus als erster erwähnt. Er vermutete in diesem Organ den Sitz des Mutes und nannte es daher όϑvμóς. Bassius (1731), Cowper (1739), Hewson (1774) u. a. sahen das Organ als Lymphdrüse an. Becker (1826) brachte es funktionell mit Milz, Schilddrüse und Nebenniere in Zusammenhang.
