Lung Resection in Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Abstract

The first attempted resection of the lung for tuberculosis is generally attributed to Block of Berlin. In 1881 he performed bilateral apical resection. As a result of the operation the patient died and legal action was taken against the surgeon, who committed suicide. In 1891 Tuffier carried out the first successful operation and, some years later, Lawson and Doyen reported cases of successful resection.
