Zusammenfassung

Wer von Innerasien oder Innerafrika spricht, denkt an Gegenden, die schwer zugänglich, spärlich bewohnt und kaum bekannt sind. Kontinente sind meist von der Küste her „erobert“ worden. Der Eindringling kam die großen Flußläufe, den Nil, die Wolga, den Mississippi oder den Hudson hinauf. Im Jahre 1858 befuhren sechzig Dampfschiffe regelmäßig den Missouri. Hinter den Landeplätzen von Independence, St. Joseph und Leavenworth begann die große amerikanische Wüste, die amerikanische Landkarten von 1654 und 1700 ebenso weiß lassen wie unsere Globen die Gegenden urn den Nordpol. Erst 1825 wurde der Santa Fé Trail in Benutzung genommen; er war einem Karawanenweg durch die Sahara ähnlich. 1841 kam der Oregon Trail hinzu. Sechs Jahre danach zogen die Mormonen nach dem Großen Salzsee, urn in der Wildnis Ruhe vor Verfolgungen zu finden. Vorher wurden die riesigen Steppen und die gewaltigen Gebirgszuge nur von einzelnen Händlern und Jägern durchstreift, meistens Franzosen. In den vierziger Jahren kam Josiahs Tagebuch heraus2. Zögernd begann Inner-Amerika in den Gesichtskreis der Menschen zu treten.
