Zusammenfassung

Dank der grundlegenden Arbeiten von NEUFELD und HÄNDEL über die Serumtherapie der Pneumonie, die zu der Feststellung führten, daß verschiedene, immunologisch vollkommen voneinander zu trennende Typen der Pneumokokken zu unterscheiden sind, wurden der Forschung über das Pneumonieproblem Anregungen vermittelt, die bis in die Gegenwart hinein außerordentlich wertvolle Fortschritte in unseren Kenntnissen über die Ätiologie, Pathogenese, Epidemiologie und die spezifische Therapie zu erbringen vermochten. Keineswegs ist aber auf diesem Gebiet die Forschungsarbeit abgeschlossen, viele Teilfragen konnten bisher über das Anfangsstadium noch nicht hinausgetragen werden. Es seien nur die Versuche erwähnt, eine Bekämpfung der Pneumonie durch Schutzimpfungsmaßnahmen durchzuführen. Man denke an die fehlenden oder doch nur mangelhaften Maßnahmen einer spezifischen Therapie der Pneumonien des frühen Kindesalters (in dem die verschiedenen Pneumonieformen die häufigste Todesursache darstellen), an die noch nicht ausreichenden Erfolge der Serumtherapie, besonders die der Typen II und III, sowie der Gruppe IV. Selbst grundlegende bakteriologische Fragen über die Variabilität der Pneumokokken, über die Typenverteilung der Pneumokokken bei den meisten menschlichen Infektionen, wie Herdpneumonien, Peritonitis, Bronchitis, Conjunctivitis u. a. harren noch endgültiger Lösung. Es mag vermessen erscheinen, der 1928 aus der so berufenen Feder von NEUFELD zusammen mit SCHNITZER erschienenen Monographie über „Pneumokokken“ nach relativ kurzer Zeit eine zusammenfassende Darstellung über die Pneumoniefrage folgen zu lassen.
