Zusammenfassung
Die Bezeichnung Vitamine ist im Jahre 1912 von C. Funk für eine Klasse biologisch höchst bedeutsamer Verbindungen – Regulatoren von Lebensprozessen – geprägt worden. C. Funk wollte mit dieser Bezeichnung zum Ausdruck bringen, daß es sich dabei um lebenswichtige, stickstoffhaltige Verbindungen handelt. In neuester Zeit ist der exakte Nachweis erbracht worden, daß diese Nomenklatur zum Teil wenigstens zu Recht besteht. Die Vitamine der B-Reihe, mit denen sich C. Funk zuerst befaßt hat, sind im Falle von B1 und B2 sowie B4 als stickstoffhaltige Verbindungen erkannt worden. Der Gruppenname Vitamine hat sich heute allgemein eingebürgert, nachdem eine Zeitlang auch Bezeichnungen wie „akzessorische Nährstoffe (Hofmeister), Ergänzungsstoffe (Schaumann), Extraktstoffe (Aron) sowie Komplettine (R. Berg)” benutzt worden sind.
