Zusammenfassung
„Virus“ bedeutet in der lateinischen Sprache ebenso wie das synonym verwendete Wort „Venenum“ ein Gift, nach der volkstümlichen Vorstellung also eine unbelebte Substanz, die von außen in den Organismus eingeführt kraft ihrer chemischen Natur krankmachende Wirkungen entfaltet. In der ätiologischen Krankheitsforschung hat dagegen der Ausdruck „Virus“ einen ganz anderen Sinn erworben. Das Eindringen von außen und die pathogene Auswirkung sind zwar noch immer begriffsbestimmende Merkmale geblieben, aber sie gelten nicht mehr uneingeschränkt und treten gegen zwei andere prinzipiell wichtige Kriterien in den Hintergrund: Die Vermehrungsfähigkeit in einem fremden Organismus und die dadurch bedingte unbegrenzte Übertragbarkeit von einem empfänglichen Individuum auf ein anderes, die Fortpflanzung und Erhaltung in „endlosen Wirtsketten“. Durch diese und nur durch diese Eigenschaften erscheinen aber jene krankheitserregenden Agenzien erschöpfend definiert, die man als Kontagien oder Infektionsstoffe bezeichnet. Es wäre daher zweifellos richtiger, statt von Virusarten2 von Infektionsstoffen zu sprechen. Daß die Infektionsstoffe nicht einfach als spezifische Gifte aufgefaßt werden können, hat ja schon Fracastoroin seinem unsterblichen Werke „De con- tagione“ (1546) klar auseinandergesetzt, und diese Erkenntnis war es, welche der Hypothese vom belebten Erreger stets neue Impulse zuführte, bis sie durch Jakob Henle, Jean Louis Pasteur und Robert Kochzuverlässig begründet wurde.
Die Grundlage dieses Artikels bilden 5 Vorträge, die der Verfasser im April 1934 am Medical College der St. Andrewes-Universität in Dundee (Schottland) gehalten hat. Für die Drucklegung in diesen Ergebnissen wurde die Gliederung des Stoffes beibehalten, der ursprüngliche Text jedoch vielfach ergänzt und mit Rücksicht auf inzwischen erschienene Publikationen und eigene Untersuchungen auch in einigen, zum Teil wesentlichen Beziehungen abgeändert.
