Abstract

(1) Introduction. It was shown in the last chapter that, in populations of animals, changes in sensitivity to drugs can be produced by a wide variety of causes, and that in some cases variations in sensitivity occur for which the causes are unknown. It seems justifiable to assume that if the condition of organisms is altered by the administration of one drug, then this change will probably alter the sensitivity of the organism to other drugs. According to this view almost any pair of drugs are likely to show either antagonism or synergism to a greater or less extent.
