Zusammenfassung
Der Feinbau der Schilddrüse wurde in seinen Grundzügen schon vor einem Menschenalter erkannt. Eine planmäßige Erforschung der Struktur des rätselhaften Organes konnte jedoch erst einsetzen, nachdem Anhaltspunkte und endlich Beweise für die innersekretorische Tätigkeit der Schilddrüse erbracht worden waren, die vielen als Blutspeicher, Organ des Schlafes, Wärmeschutzvorrichtung für den Kehlkopf oder — wie beispielsweise Lionardo da Vinci — als eine für die schöne Formung des Halses verantwortliche Bildung gegolten hatte. Die von Henle (1841), Stannius (1846), Gerlach (1850) und anderen Anatomen vertretene, bei oberflächlicher Betrachtung modern anmutende Anschauung, die Schilddrüse sei als „Blutgefäßdrüse“ dem Blutgefäßsystem wie eine Lymphdrüse dem Lymphgefäßsystem angeschlossen, begünstigte teils das Verharren in verschwommenen Vorstellungen von einer irgendwie gearteten Beeinflussung der Säfte durch das Organ, teils verführte sie zu der Behauptung, die Aufgabe der Schilddrüse bestehe in der Abgabe von Zellelementen an den Blutstrom (Kohlrausch 1853). Folgende Zeilen Leydigs (1857) über die Schilddrüse, der er in seinem trefflichen Lehrbuche der Histologie einen bescheidenen Platz unter den Atmungsorganen einräumt, kennzeichnen die Verlegenheit, in der die Forschung vor etwa 80 Jahren sich befand: „Übrigens ist uns die Funktion der Schilddrüse ganz unbekannt, und wir flüchten uns, wie in ähnlichen Fällen, hinter die oft zum Ersatz eintretende Bemerkung: es diene fragliches Organ zu einer bestimmten Umänderung des Blutes.“ Von der unklaren Vorstellung über die Funktion der Schilddrüse bis zu dem Satze: „Die Schilddrüse kann ausgerottet werden ohne allen Nachtheil für das Leben“ (kolb 1864) lag für manchen Mediziner nur ein kleiner Schritt.
