Zusammenfassung

Der Amerikaner Dandy ist der erste, der Gase als Kontrastmittel in der Röntgendiagnostik des Zentralnervensystems angewandt hat. Er teilte im Jahre 1919 seine ersten Ergebnisse an 8 Fällen mit, an denen er teils durch Lumbalpunktion, teils durch direkte Ventrikelpunktion durch kleine Trepanationsöffnungen im Schädel Gase einführte. Bei der Einblasung in den Lumbalkanal fand er das Gas auch im Subarachnoidealraum des Gehirns. In den Gehirnventrikeln fand er es nur beim sog. kommunizierenden Hydro. cephalus. Bei direkter Füllung der Ventrikel drang es auch in den Subarachnoidealraum des Gehirns ein. Dandy hat hauptsächlich die „Verttrikulographie“ mit der Trepanationsmethode geübt. Die Röntgenbilder gaben ihm wichtige Aufschlüsse bei Erkrankungen des Gehirns, besonders bei Tumoren. Im Jahre 1920 berichtete er über 75 Fälle von Hirntumor, die er mit seiner Methode lokalisiert hat.
