Abstract
The Mach bands are bright or dark lines that are perceived near the boundary between a brightly illuminated region and a dimly illuminated region of the visual field (Fig. 1). The bands are a subjective contrast effect: they seem brighter or darker than their surroundings, although the physical distribution of light does not show any positive or negative peaks at the points where the bands are perceived.
