Abstract
“Scaling” refers to a family of procedures that attempt to give quantitative descriptions of perceptual attributes. The first part of this chapter discusses the three main families of scaling procedures : confusability scaling, direct estimation, and multidimensional scaling. Several applications of these procedures are described in the second part : scaling of brightness, hue and saturation, and color differences are discussed in some detail, and brief mention is made of work on space and form perception.
